About the Role:
The Métis Bail Supervision Coordinator operates within their designated city, providing virtual and in-person services. The Métis Bail Supervision Coordinator is responsible for the provision of case management support for Métis persons who are actively involved in the criminal justice system at the bail and bail release phase. This includes creating client-led bail plans, supporting clients during bail supervision, ensuring clients understand the conditions of their bail release, provide post-bail release supervision check-ins, and appropriate client referrals. The Métis Bail Supervision Coordinator is responsible for supporting clients released on bail to the Métis Bail Supervision Program. The Métis Bail Supervision Coordinator is responsible for meeting with relevant stakeholders to build partnerships for the purpose of creating referral streams to the MNO Bail Supervision program. The position is essential to our work to provide care and support necessary to meet the fundamental needs of the citizens of the Métis Nation as outlined in the Statement of Prime Purpose. This position reports to the Supervisor of Advocacy.

What you will be doing:
  • Review client’s criminal history and current charges to make informed decisions about program eligibility, ensuring program approval is reflected in the program verification forms to be provided to duty counsel and Crown attorneys.
  • Screen clients’ eligibility for the Métis Bail Supervision Program, liaising with duty counsel and Crown attorneys in a timely manner to indicate eligibility outcomes.
  • Facilitate referrals to internal and external services as appropriate, including mental health and addiction, housing, food security, etc.
  • Schedule and conduct client supervision appointments, ensuring client is accountable to appointments, and report failure to attend appointments to justice officials (in accordance with program policy).
  • Develop culturally-appropriate and client-led bail release plans for Métis clients at the bail stage of criminal justice involvement.
  • Support Métis clients by advocating for consideration of Gladue factors at bail court.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners, correctional facilities, and other justice system stakeholders to promote and support the bail supervision program.
  • Attend bail court and correctional facilities to meet with clients for bail release plans, screening for bail supervision, and to complete intakes as appropriate.
  • Respond to general inquiries about the Métis Bail Supervision Program’s purpose, processes, and procedures and/or any other information being requested.
  • Provide case and file management, including assisting Métis clients in understanding and following through with the conditions of their bail release by addressing gaps in supports and services.
  • Support unrepresented and represented clients with completion of bail variation forms.
  • Track program statistics to be reported quarterly to the Program Supervisor.
  • Promote the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)
  • Report all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to all Health and Safety requirements within the MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation.
  • Perform other job/branch-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • College Diploma (3 Year)
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in Indigenous client justice services, social work, and/or case management
  • Demonstrated experience with personal and confidential information and issues in a professional, tactful and diplomatic manner
  • Demonstrated experience in quickly acquiring and expanding knowledge and being flexible in a demanding and dynamic environment
  • Experience integrating trauma-informed approaches into their work
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, Métis-specific programs, community supports and services available to Métis communities throughout Ontario
  • Knowledge of trauma informed approaches
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment including Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe and other software;
  • Demonstrated case management experience and ability to manage a case load that is high at times
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships with justice system officials, stakeholders and community members
  • Firm understanding of criminal court procedures, including bail court and the application of Gladue principles at bail for Métis people
  • Superior organization skills and time/priority management
  • Willing and able to travel throughout Ontario for Advocacy Program objectives and training
  • Willing and able to occasionally work hours outside of the regular Monday-Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm schedule.
  • Must possess a valid G-class driver’s license
