Applications are invited from qualified internal Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists to participate in a developmental educational opportunity to support the future growth of Rheumatology services at NBRHC.
Position: One (1) ACPAC Educational Internship (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist)
Department: Allied Rehab Services - Rheumatology Clinic
This internship is being offered to Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, providing the unique opportunity to learn and experience another specialty area of healthcare, in accordance with Article 13.11 of the OPSEU Collective Agreement (associated Letter of Understanding attached) through a collaboration between NBRHC and the Ontario Rheumatological Association.
The successful candidate will participate in the Advanced Clinician in Arthritis Care (ACPAC) Program, facilitated by the University of Toronto and Schroeder Arthritis Institute. This course is delivered through 5 intensive one-week sessions, comprised of both in-person and virtual synchronous sessions, that will be held between September 2026 and May 2027. In addition, the successful candidate is required to complete a minimum of 160 hours of clinical practice with a Rheumatologist (ideally through the NBRHC Rheumatology Clinic). The successful candidate will coordinate these clinical learning experiences, with support available if required.
ACPAC learning activities, including course sessions, tuition/registration fees, travel & accommodation and required clinical practice hours, will be completed during paid education time, up to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week, with the successful candidate released from their regular duties during these times.
As this opportunity is intended to support the development of internal ACPAC capacity within the NBRHC Rheumatology Clinic, the successful candidate will be required to commit to a minimum of three (3) years of service to the NBRHC Rheumatology Clinic, commencing at the start of the ACPAC education program.
Upon successful completion of the ACPAC Program, the successful candidate will be expected to apply for any future ACPAC positions posted in accordance with the applicable collective agreement and participate in the established recruitment process. Positions requiring the ACPAC certification are compensated at the applicable rate associated with the Advanced Practice Physiotherapist classification in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

All new hires are required to complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) or a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC), as applicable to the position. A satisfactory result, in accordance with organizational requirements, is a condition of employment.

Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Successfully complete all ACPAC coursework, assignments, examinations, and clinical learning requirements.
- Coordinate the required clinical practice hours with a Rheumatologist.
- Maintain regular communication with the Rheumatologist mentor, ACPAC clinical facilitators, and Manager of Allied Rehab Services regarding progress.
- Provide documentation confirming successful completion of the ACPAC Program.
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) or the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) required
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development, quality patient care, and safety required
- Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills required
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interprofessional team required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and virtual learning platforms required
- Good attendance and work record required
- Experience in arthritis, rheumatology, musculoskeletal assessment, and/or rehabilitation an asset
- Demonstrated advanced clinical reasoning and commitment to ongoing learning an asset
- Ability to contribute to the development of a new clinical service an asset
- Experience with patient education and strong relationship-building skills an asset
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
