Our AI Center of Excellence builds data-driven automation capabilities to support core operations at global scale. We leverage off the sciences of data, information processing, machine learning, and generative AI to improve user experience, automation, service resilience, and operational efficiency. Our work expands AI-driven capabilities of our businesses in primarily Retail and IT with global impact.

Key job responsibilities

Role

We're seeking an experienced Applied Science Manager to guide our team in creating practical AI solutions for real-world problems. In this role, you will:

  • Oversee the development of AI applications that meet business needs
  • Ensure our team stays current with advancements in machine learning and data science
  • Balance theoretical knowledge with practical implementation
  • Mentor team members and foster a collaborative work environment
  • Work closely with customers and partners to understand their requirements

You should have a strong background in AI/ML, proven leadership skills, and the ability to translate complex concepts into actionable plans. We value your expertise in bridging the gap between research and application.

A day in the life

Your daily work will be diverse and dynamic. You'll collaborate with scientists and ML engineers, reviewing data processing approaches and machine learning models. You'll plan and oversee large-scale experiments, balancing immediate project needs with long-term scientific initiatives.

Typical tasks include solving complex data science problems, developing ML/AI solutions for automation and insights, and interacting with internal partners. You'll stay connected to production environments to ensure customer needs are met.

Mentoring team members and leading educational sessions on AI/ML best practices will be part of your role. This position requires adaptability, as you'll switch between technical work, strategic planning, and people management throughout your day.

We work side by side to address the technical challenges of automation, service resilience, and operational efficiency across a variety of products, softwares, and systems. Our scientists and machine learning engineers work in synergy to solve hard problems and enrich each other's skills. Together, we are a powerful team of specialists in EU and NA bringing the potential of practical ML and AI to the max with impact on millions of Amazon customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field
  • Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics
  • 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience
  • Experience in applied research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application
  • Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers

The base salary for this position ranges from $222,800/year up to $372,000/year. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
