Position Summary

The Capital Project Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, execution, and delivery of capital projects in an industrial setting. This role requires technical expertise and project management skills to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. Candidates from Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or other engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Project Engineering & Design:

  • Lead or support the development of capital projects across multiple disciplines.
  • Prepare engineering documents, design packages, and specifications.
  • Interpret and create P&IDs, process flow diagrams, isometrics, schematics, and layout drawings.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (Operations, Maintenance, Procurement, EHS, etc.).
  • Provide technical guidance during project design, construction, and commissioning phases.

Project Management

  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, procurement, and risk.
  • Prepare cost estimates, material take-offs, and RFQs.
  • Lead design reviews, value engineering sessions, and constructability reviews.
  • Oversee contractor and vendor activities, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Ensure timely documentation, progress reporting, and communication with stakeholders.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with corporate safety policies, engineering standards, and regulatory codes (e.g., ASME, CSA, ABSA).
  • Incorporate process safety and operability considerations into project design.
  • Support environmental and regulatory permitting as required.

The Job You Will Perform

Engineering & Technical Duties:

  • Lead or contribute to the detailed design, specification, and execution of facility systems and infrastructure, which may include mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, or piping systems.
  • Conduct engineering assessments and support equipment sizing, selection, and layout based on project needs and industry standards.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation such as process flow diagrams (PFDs), isometrics, schematics, and construction work packages.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure seamless integration of systems in engineering designs (e.g., with P&IDs, electrical schematics, or instrumentation layouts).
  • Maintain and update engineering control documents and ensure adherence to current engineering standards.
  • Support process safety initiatives and provide technical troubleshooting and plant optimization support.
  • Participate in design reviews and regulatory compliance evaluations.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and completeness of technical deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Management Duties

  • Manage or support the delivery of capital projects from feasibility through to commissioning and handover.
  • Ensure all aspects of project delivery—safety, scope, schedule, budget, quality, procurement, and change control—are effectively managed.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, external vendors, and regional engineering teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Lead or participate in project value-improvement practices, constructability reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Develop technical specifications, data sheets, and RFPs for equipment and services.
  • Oversee procurement activities, including vendor communication, drawing reviews, and expediting of materials.
  • Coordinate and review inspection and QA/QC activities related to fabricated or installed systems.
  • Monitor construction progress and manage commissioning/start-up activities to ensure safe, compliant, and successful project implementation.

The Skills You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related field).
  • 5–10 years of relevant engineering/project experience in an industrial environment.
  • Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Registered Engineering Technologist with a provincial regulatory body (e.g., APEGA).
  • Familiarity with relevant design codes and standards (e.g., ASME, B31.3, IEEE, ABSA).
  • Proficiency with engineering and design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SAP).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience managing contractors and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
  • Industrial or heavy manufacturing experience is preferred.
