ROLE PURPOSE
This role will contribute to the establishment and operation of a Fraser Health-funded Assisted Living program for individuals who are living with an acquired brain injury and require support to live more independently in the community. The Mental Health Support Worker will build relationships and assist residents to transition into and live successfully in the residence, ensuring that residents’ physical, emotional, social, educational, and medical needs are met. They will work alongside other staff to assist residents with activities of daily living and the development of life skills.
HOURS
Mornings (08:00 – 16:00)
Evenings (16:00 – 00:00)
Overnights (00:00 – 08:00)
Casual employees must be available for at least 21 shifts per month in which seven are overnight shifts. If you are working full-time, or if you are a full-time student, we ask you for 15 shifts of availability per month in which five are overnight shifts (this is subject to employer or enrollment proof).
These positions require the ability to work flexible hours during the daytime, evenings, and weekends based on operational needs.

- Assists residents with life skills, including establishing identification and bank accounts, schedule reminders, meal planning and food preparation, household management/cleaning, budget planning and money management), ensuring taxes are completed annually.
- Assists residents with self management of physical and emotional health
- Assists residents with activities of daily living
- Administers and monitors client medications
- Supervises the activities of the residence, its residents, and volunteers while on shift including maintaining case notes and the logbook
- Other duties may be assigned
- Diploma, preferably in behavioural sciences, social work, community social services or criminology or equivalent with one-year related work experience
- Experience working with people with acquired brain injuries and/or substance use
- Clear ability to respond well in crisis situations
- Experience working in Assisted Living or other relevant residential setting
- Experience working with individuals under the Adult Guardianship Act is considered a bonus
- An understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities
- Demonstrated good working knowledge of the technical details important to the functioning of group residences
- Demonstrated the ability to teach skills and work effectively with others
- Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in case planning, behaviour modification techniques, and psychosocial rehabilitative techniques
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

- Ability to walk up and down stairs
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to move items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone administration
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
- Ability to complete general housekeeping duties (i.e., sweeping, mopping, wiping areas, laundry, changing light bulbs)
- Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
- Ability to successfully complete a character reference check
- Ability to provide a record of work history
- Current Emergency First Aid Certificate (please refer to the Certificates accepted in B.C. - WorkSafeBC)
- Proof of vaccination for communicable diseases may be required as mandated by Government, Health Authority, and/or funder requirements
- Evidence of compliance with the province’s immunization and tuberculosis control programs
- Class 5 driver’s license
- Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport residents
