This role focuses on supporting students in first-year university-level engineering courses, helping them strengthen their conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Academic and Operations Coordinator of the Year One Foundation Program, the Engineering Tutor will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions to international university students in engineering-related subjects such as mathematics, physics, statics, dynamics, and introductory programming.
  • Supporting students in developing analytical thinking and structured problem-solving approaches, including breaking down complex problems step by step.
  • Helping students apply theoretical knowledge to practical and real-world engineering contexts.
  • Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide feedback on their academic development.
  • Clarifying course material and providing guidance on assignments, homework, quizzes, and exam preparation using clear and accessible explanations.
  • Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.

Qualifications & Experience

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or Engineering Science).
  • Strong proficiency at the university-level engineering subjects in mathematics, physics, chemistry and introductory programming, depending on student needs. Courses will be similar to those students take in the Engineering Qualifying Year.
  • Strong ability to connect formulas and calculations to underlying principles; and to break down complex engineering concepts into clear, manageable steps using examples, diagrams, or real-world analogies.
  • Prior tutoring, teaching, or laboratory instruction experience, particularly with international students, is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Patience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to supporting international students’ academic success.
  • Awareness of language barriers and strategies for supporting students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
