Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Children/Youth Worker coordinates activities associated with discipleship and outreach ministries to youth (for assigned age groupings) from the Church and the local community.
Accountabilities:
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:
- Contributes to the spiritual development of the youth in the church by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modelling appropriate Christian attitudes and behaviours
- Coordinates, implements, maintains and assists in the evaluation of programs/ministries relevant to the youth of the church and the community at large; may plan and conduct creative worship services, evangelistic outreach, care programs (including on-going visitation), and Bible studies as applicable
- Prays with and or leads youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits
- May develop and implement appropriate leadership development programs for youth and those involved in youth leadership; recruits, orients and trains volunteer leaders.
- Works in cooperation and consultation with the church’s administrative and pastoral care givers in corporate problem-solving for the benefit of the church and individuals
- Knows and acts in accordance with security procedures of the church to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information
- Interacts with community partners and resources to provide services to youth; may include participation on community committees
- Maintains written records / logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information)
- Organizes and holds fundraising events throughout the year
- Performs other duties as assigned
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Participation in Youth and Community Ministry Team meetings Corps Officer, volunteers, staff.
External: Community, clients.
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to:
Direct reports: None
The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised.
The incumbent manages between 1 - 6 volunteers.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:
The incumbent has input to and/or participates in preparing budgets with respect to the departmental budget.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically at Church, in community centres, camps, homes, schools and restaurants.
The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
- Dealing with angry/upset youth and parents
- Irregular hours (e.g. late nights, on-call)
- Verbal abuse
The incumbent may have little to no travel required.The incumbent works on call, with unpredictable hours.
The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Moving objects
- Risk of sport related injuries
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to 6 months.
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
Experience and Knowledge:
The successful applicant will hold/have:
- Youth leadership training, Biblical studies
- Immunization for Hepatitis
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
- Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
One year but less than three years of prior related experience, including, experience working with children and youth.
Skills and Capabilities:
The performance of the job requires frequent set-up and clean up for activities, participating in sports activities, keyboarding, and occasionally transporting youth and standing.
- The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.
- The performance of the job requires attention when teaching, giving advice/peer support, studying and planning and development.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $20.09 to $25.11 with a maximum of $30.13.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
