As an Equipment Operator II with Old Man Creek Nursery, you will operate a variety of large trucks (5-ton tandems, 3-ton single axle dumps), loaders, tractor/loaders, track loaders, skid steer loaders, & pull trailers. Equipment must be operated with expertise and safety. You will utilize your ability to work independently using strong organization skills to meet the needs of Forestry Operations.

What will you do?

  • Operate a 5-ton dump trucks and a trailer to haul, load, and unload trees and soil to the Forestry Planting team at various sites around the City
  • Work with Skid Steers, Track Loaders, Tractors, and other equipment when assigned as part of Nursery operations
  • Rigging and lifting of wire-basketed and burlapped caliper trees
  • Loading and unloading trucks with material
  • Daily maintenance of equipment
  • Daily record keeping including verification of tree load lists
  • Performing other related duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • A minimum of 3 years experience with Forestry or Nursery Operations including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment is required
  • A minimum of 2 years operating large trucks and trailers (ideally 5 tons or larger)
  • Trailer training


Assets:

  • WHMIS Training, Emergency First Aid Certificate, Chainsaw Training
  • Rigging and Lifting Training
  • Working knowledge of landscape trees and horticultural practices for care of plant material
  • Skid Steer/ Front end loader certificate, tractor training


Skills required for success:

  • Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing and maintaining equipment
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work
  • Ability to complete task cards, work records and interpret work assignments
  • Proficiency in computer-related work using Google Suite

Conditions of Employment:

  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position (This requires the ability to be clean-shaven)
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots & hard hats, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement & Eligibility for a 12,300 kg City of Edmonton Driving Permit (Class D) is a requirement of this position

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
