The Opportunity:
The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Facility Operations Worker 1. This position provides a clean, safe, secure, and efficiently operating environment for users of recreation facilities, with a strong focus on delivering high-quality customer service. The role includes completing assigned work tasks, supervising users in designated facilities, and performing minor maintenance and repairs to equipment and facilities in accordance with established standards.
Top Key Responsibilities:

Facility Operation & Maintenance - Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facility through high‑standard custodial services and post‑use inspections. Perform general handyman work, preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and emergency repairs to facilities and equipment in accordance with operational and safety standards. Inspect, test, and monitor facility systems, mechanical equipment, and assigned facility elements to ensure readiness for public use. Identify, document, and report major maintenance or repair issues and coordinate with contracted service providers when required. Safely operate motorized equipment and vehicles. Stay current with facility operation and preventative maintenance manuals.

Risk Management, Safety & Security - Ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards, policies, and operational procedures. Monitor facility use to ensure patron safety, appropriate behaviour, and protection of facilities and equipment. Maintain building and site security, addressing incidents and escalating major concerns to supervisors. Participate in safety programs, inspections, meetings, and emergency response procedures. Complete incident reports, safety documentation, and hazard reporting as required.

Communication & Customer Service - Deliver professional, respectful customer service to facility users, organizations, and the public. Monitor facility schedules and bookings, reporting changes and making operational adjustments as needed. Communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and service providers to support smooth facility operations.

Administration - Complete daily activity reports, operating logs, work logs, and required documentation. Monitor and control admissions, including cash or ticket handling when assigned. Maintain accurate records to support shift communication and operational continuity.
As our preferred candidate, you will have:

Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.

Six months related experience in a similar public facility with related building maintenance components, preferably in a recreation environment.

Certification in Intermediate First aid.

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license required.

Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check (completed by The City upon employment)

Able to work weekends, weekdays, evenings and shift work hours. Able to quickly respond to emergency and security situations and address maintenance and staff problems.

Demonstrate experience and knowledge of the requirements of various sporting and other activities performed in each facility.

Able to prepare and maintain accurate inventory and facility use records, and to perform basic arithmetic calculations both manually and on computer.

Communicates respectfully and effectively, both orally and in writing in the English language with other City staff, facility users, and general public; responding courteously to complaints and to inappropriate behaviour.

Able to deal with people in a firm, but not aggressive manner, and to act with sound judgment under pressure.

When delegated, able to organize, supervise, and monitor the work of other staff and contractors.

Able to work with considerable independence and support a team.

Able to exert moderate physical effort on occasion and works in all types of environments, including but not limited to, closed spaces, heights, cold, hot, chemical areas and noisy conditions.

Able to manage multiple task demands, using time management and sound decision-making and judgment to prioritize and complete requirements.

Must be able to be fit tested and successfully wear CSA approved equipment to meet OH&S requirements.

Able to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

$30.05 to $31.81 per hour
Hours of Work:
Hours of work as scheduled with no minimum guarantee. Shifts scheduled for days, evenings, weekends and shift work to meet the needs of the facility.
