Horizon Drilling, a division of Western Energy Services Corp. is hiring an HSE Superintendent to join our growing team!


Western Energy Services Corp. is an oilfield service company which provides contract drilling services through Horizon Drilling in Canada and Stoneham Drilling Corporation in the United States. In addition, Western provides well servicing through Eagle Well Servicing in Canada, and provides rental services through Aero Rental Services in Canada.


Position Summary

The HSE Superintendent will champion the proactive delivery and continuous improvement of HSE programs across all subsidiaries under the parent company. This position requires a hands-on, field-oriented individual who thrives in dynamic environments and excels at building trust-based relationships with field personnel, client representatives, and leadership teams. The HSE Superintendent serves as both a technical expert and coach, driving a culture of safety excellence through field engagement, risk mitigation, workforce mentoring, inspections, and incident prevention strategies. This position requires professionalism, diplomacy, critical thinking, and a strong ability to influence change on the front lines.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive field-level risk assessments and trend analysis.
  • Perform daily and periodic safety inspections and audits across all operational sites.
  • Develop and maintain leading and lagging indicator metrics to monitor HSE performance.
  • Support HSE Management System implementation and verify field compliance through assurance reviews.
  • Engage in pre-job planning, hazard identification, and the implementation of critical controls.
  • Conduct regular site visits to mentor, coach, and support front-line workers and supervisors.
  • Participate in pre-tour meetings and facilitate job-specific training to improve hazard awareness and mitigation.
  • Provide immediate coaching during unsafe acts/conditions to correct behavior and reinforce expectations.
  • Communicate HSE program strengths and improvements to clients and stakeholders.
  • Support site tours, orientations, and collaborative walk-throughs with client HSE teams.
  • Facilitate alignment between company and client HSE expectations and reporting requirements.
  • Lead and support field-level incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Develop and distribute clear and actionable Learning from Incidents bulletins and alerts.
  • Track, verify, and close all corrective and preventive actions resulting from incidents or audits.
  • Promote near miss reporting and safety observations as tools for proactive learning.
  • Lead or support safety meetings, stand-downs, and targeted awareness campaigns.
  • Ensure field operations are compliant with applicable OH&S, WHMIS, and environmental legislation.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 1+ years of experience in oilfield HSE; knowledge of Drilling, Well Servicing, and/or Rentals operations preferred.
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
  • CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent professional designation (or working toward certification) considered an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable OH&S regulations, WHMIS, and environmental standards.
  • Experience with risk assessments, incident investigation, audits, and safety management systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with digital HSE systems preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license; comfortable with travel to remote field locations.
  • Strong field presence and a proactive, hands-on approach.
  • Confident and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Effective mentor and safety leader with influencing skills.
  • Team-oriented with strong problem-solving ability.
  • Comfortable working independently in diverse field environments.


Special Conditions of Employment

  • Frequent travel to different field locations is required
  • Overtime will be required, based on activities
  • Ability to travel regularly to multiple locations within Western Canada
  • Current regulatory safety certificates including, but not limited to, H2S Alive
  • Must have valid driver’s license and able to provide current driver’s abstract upon request.

This position can be based in our Leduc, AB or Grande Prairie, AB office.
