POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Human Rights and Equity Advisor and the Indigenous Education Lead, the First Nations Cultural Coordinator will support Indigenous students, Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff with making connections to culture and identity. They will support positive student mental health focused on emotional, spiritual, behavioral and physical well-being grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
QUALIFICATIONS
First Nations lived experience that has shaped your personal identity, identifies your connection and relationship within the community, ongoing learning and growth with First Nation language(s) and is connected to ceremony and culture. In addition to being a First Nations person, a College diploma or University degree in Social Work/Social Service Work/Education/Indigenous Studies or equivalent experience in a related field of work. Indigenous language fluency is preferred (Anishinaabemowin, Oji-cree, Cree and/or Michif). Experience, relationships and connection with First Nations communities. Lived experience and knowledge of Indigenous culture and the ability to lead ceremonies with Indigenous students. Understanding of current and emerging issues concerning Indigenous student health, mental health, and wellness. Experience working with Indigenous children and families. Able to work collaboratively in a team environment alongside the Indigenous Education Lead, Secondary Graduation Coaches and Pathways Coaches. Lead and incorporate land-based cultural teachings into curriculum that reflect the values of respect, reciprocity, and responsibility in connection to land and community. Teaching relationships with the land- safe and respectful manner. Experience working with Indigenous people and organizations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skill. Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information. This position will require a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) or a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) at the employee’s expense.
