Internal Medicine - #226711

Health Match BC

Date: 5 days ago
City: Terrace, BC
Contract type: Full time
Role and Facility Information

We are seeking General Internists to join a dedicated team of specialists and family physicians serving the diverse population of Terrace and surrounding communities. This is an exciting opportunity to practice full-spectrum Internal Medicine in a collegial environment, with a broad and meaningful scope of work.

The Successful Candidate Will Provide

  • ICU coverage
  • Inpatient and regional consultation services
  • Outpatient Internal Medicine clinics

Practice Structure & Schedule

  • Inpatient Schedule: Divided by weeks with two options:
  • A split service model where two providers share call and clinical responsibilities (2:5 global coverage)
  • A single-provider model where one provider covers all call and service for the week (1:5 global coverage – this can be very busy)
  • Outpatient Work: Managed through the provider’s private clinic and scheduled at their discretion

Subspecialty Support & Case Mix

  • Subspecialty Support: While there are no in-community subspecialists, we are well-supported by remote telephone advice across all subspecialties. Additionally, visiting specialists such as Neurologists, Rheumatologists, and ENT physicians provide intermittent in-person support.
  • Typical Cases: The case mix is broad and encompasses the full spectrum of General Internal Medicine. Patients in the North are often underserved and present with more advanced pathology. GIM physicians are typically the first point of contact for specialized care, with subspecialists involved as needed.
  • Required Skills: Full-spectrum GIM skillset including acute intensive care, acute cardiology, procedures, and broad inpatient and outpatient consultative capabilities.

We encourage interested candidates to consider a locum placement first, if possible.

In addition to General Internists, specialists currently working in Terrace include General Surgeons, Obstetrician-Gynecologists, Pediatricians, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Ophthalmologists, a Pathologist, Radiologists, a Plastic Surgeon, an Anesthesiologist, and FP-Anesthetists. Emergency Physicians and Family Physicians cover the ED and Inpatients.

Terrace is the medical hub for the Northwest of the province with a new build hospital, Ksyen Regional Hospital, welcoming its first patients in November 2024. More than double the size of the previous hospital, it is a center for trauma services, acute care, surgical services, pathology, radiology, clinical support, and pharmacy services for the Northwest region. The hospital staff prides itself on delivering culturally safe care to our Indigenous populations.

  • 42 Acute Care Beds
  • 20 bed Psychiatry unit
  • 4 surgical suites, including a dedicated Orthopedics OR
  • 6 ICU Beds, with potential to expand to 8
  • 20 Bed Emergency Department with 2 Trauma Bays
  • Large Ambulatory Care Unit
  • Community Cancer clinic
  • Hemodialysis Unit
  • Pediatric Care Space
  • MRI, CT, and Nuclear Medicine services

The new hospital will also include a Tier 3 neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery, which will provide community-based antenatal and postnatal services, education and parenting support to pregnant individuals.

The hospital is also a training site for medical students in the Northern Medical Program and residents through the UBC Family Medicine Residency Program.

Terrace is situated on the traditional territory of the Ts'msyen or “Tsimshian” people. Ts’msyen means “Inside the Skeena River” and the community is built at the confluence of the Kitsumkalum River into the Skeena River. Snow-capped mountains, pristine glacier-fed rivers, lakes and streams all add to the beauty of this community.

Outside of work, you can enjoy the exceptional outdoor recreational activities offered by the Pacific Northwest. From mountain biking, hiking, paddling, fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, world class ski touring, trail running, and nearby lakes, there’s no shortage of outdoor opportunities in Terrace. Affordable housing, excellent education opportunities and the well connected airport, make Terrace a wonderful place to call home.
