Lead Hand Steward

The Opportunity

Banff Centre is looking for an energetic and positive Lead Hand Steward. The Lead Hand Steward oversees and provides direction to the Stewarding team in the absence of the Stewarding Manager and Stewarding Assistant Manager. They are responsible for the cleaning of all dishes, cutlery, glassware, pots and pans, as well as the cleanliness of the dish room, garbage room, food lift, hallway to garbage room, kitchen floor and portable equipment.

Specific Accountabilities

Reporting to the Stewarding Assistant Manager/Stewarding Manager, below are some key accountabilities:

  • Read function board and ensure that all necessary dishes are set up
  • Help ensure that all equipment is in good working order and ready for use
  • Assist ensuring inventory needs for daily use and special functions
  • Fill and drain the dishwasher during the shift
  • Retrieve dish cabinets and empty them in a timely manner
  • Sort dirty dishes, cutlery, glassware by type and load into the machine
  • Unload clean dishes and kitchenware and store in designated areas
  • Prepare pots and pans for loading into dishwasher
  • Follow a weekly schedule of cleaning, soaking, and polishing duties as determined by the Assistant Chief Steward/Chief Steward
  • Clean, polish and prepare banquet equipment for special events
  • Clean dishwasher after each meal period by emptying water tanks, discarding all garbage collected in the tanks, spraying any residue of the inside of the machine and polishing the outside of the machine including the unloading end of the dishwasher
  • Clean walls, ceilings and floors in the dish-room and garbage room, including garbage bins according to daily and weekly cleaning schedule.
  • Keep the hallway adjacent to the dish-room and food lift clean
  • Racks and drip pans to be replace in Alto Shams when cleaned
  • Make sure all drains remain unplugged and cleaned at the end of shift
  • Spray and clean carts/cabinets when required
  • Ensure garbage, compost and recycling bins are hosed and soaped when necessary
  • Clean and organize dish-room shelves and kitchen shelves where the inserts are kept
  • Buckets and lids to be organized and stored in the proper area
  • Sweep and mop fridges weekly
  • Change linen and rag bags and take to assigned bins

Qualification and Educational Requirements

  • 2-4 years of Stewarding experience or similar experience
  • Understanding of Food and Beverage operations
  • Previous team lead experience is an asset
  • Strong customer/client service orientation as the position required dealing with internal and external clients
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
  • Able to communicate and take directions in English

Special Requirements

  • Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits

  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
  • This position pays $20.14 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
