Position Summary
The Machine Operator III is responsible for performing a variety of manual labour tasks to support municipal operations, including road and sidewalk maintenance, snow clearing, and general infrastructure upkeep. This role also involves operating designated equipment, such as snowplows, sidewalk machines and dump trucks, as well as conducting pre-trip inspections and assisting with other duties as assigned. The position requires a strong work ethic and adherence to workplace safety regulations. This position is temporary and will report to any section in Municipal Works including weekends and evenings.

Key Responsibilities
- Operate municipal vehicles and equipment including snowplows, sidewalk machines dump trucks, salting and sanding units, as needed.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on all assigned equipment to ensure operational safety and compliance with municipal and provincial regulations.
- Assist with snow clearing operations, including plowing, sanding, and salting municipal roads, sidewalks, and public spaces.
- Carry out manual labour tasks such as shoveling, raking, lifting, and debris removal in support of road maintenance and other municipal projects.
- Assist in pothole patching, asphalt and gravel applications, and general infrastructure maintenance.
- Load, transport, and unload materials such as gravel, sand, and debris using appropriate municipal vehicles.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and traffic control measures when working in high-traffic areas.
- Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of municipal equipment, tools, and workspaces.
- Support emergency response efforts, including road clearing, debris removal, and other urgent municipal needs as required.

Education & Certifications:
- At minimum, a valid G license is required. Ability to obtain an Ontario Class “D” Driver's License with a “Z” endorsement.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a construction or public works environment.
- Equipment Operation: Ability to operate municipal vehicles and equipment, including snowplows, sidewalk machine and dump trucks.
- Manual Labour: Strong ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, shoveling, and prolonged periods of standing or working outdoors.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of workplace safety practices, traffic control measures, and equipment operation guidelines.
- Mechanical Knowledge: Ability to perform pre-trip inspections and identify basic maintenance needs on municipal vehicles.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to assess worksite conditions and make adjustments to ensure safe and efficient task completion.
- Communication: Strong verbal communication skills to coordinate with team members, supervisors, and the public.
- Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Adaptability: Willingness to work in various weather conditions and respond to emergency situations as needed.
- Physical demands include long hours of operating equipment, shoveling, lifting, bending, kneeling, manual labor and working in inclement weather.
- Must be available for emergency call-outs, overtime, and to work during extreme weather events.
- Ability to work independently and in a team, while adhering to safety standards, quality, and compliance with municipal policies
- Work hours may vary, with typical shifts scheduled during daytime hours, but flexibility for evening or night shifts during winter operations or urgent projects.
- Must be able to work in both summer and winter conditions, with exposure to extreme weather, including snow, ice, and freezing temperatures in winter, and heat in the summer.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and hazardous conditions associated with road maintenance, snow clearing and municipal works operations.
- Standard work hours during summer operations with the potential for overtime and emergency call-ins. Assigned to a winter control shift during winter operations.
- Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
