Underwriting Manager- Corporate Commercial

The Underwriting Manager, Corporate Commercial leads the development of the Commercial Teams technical underwriting knowledge and expertise, including determination of current and future training needs, content development, delivering training, and implementing mentorships. The Underwriting Manager oversees the delegation of underwriting authority, head office referrals, and establishing Underwriting Guidelines that set the best practices the business will follow. The Underwriting Manager oversees the intake, review and monitoring of action items of the large loss process to ensure mitigation and provide insights to the underwriting teams. This role is also responsible for providing input on the commercial lines portfolio appetite to help ensure appetite and hazard categories are aligned to support the team’s profitability, strategy and reinsurance treaties. This role will assist with the review of large opportunities, including the delegation of external underwriting authorities.

What will you do?
As the Underwriting Manager- Corporate Commercial, you will:
- Manage and oversee the Head Office underwriting referral process and ensure service level agreements are maintained
- Respond to underwriting referrals within their authority
- Support profitable growth, by managing a solution-oriented referral process
- Assist directly in the review of large opportunities
- Collaborate and encourage team collaboration between Corporate and Commercial Underwriting on finding best outcomes for referrals.
- Lead training and coach managers and specialists on training methodologies
- Manage and establish onboarding process for new hires
- Work with Commercial leadership to maintain mentorships as required
- Responsible for cascade of underwriting authority throughout commercial lines
- Provide coaching to managers, specialists on how to best provide underwriters with support.
- Support Claims with any referrals for assistance
- Maintenance of the Commercial underwriting guidelines
- Working with Underwriting, Corporate and the Product & Pricing teams to propose updates and additions as needed, using referrals, audits, claims feedback and training as input
- Develop, update, maintain and communicate Guidelines and Tools to the Underwriting teams in SharePoint, to support the underwriting teams.
- Responsible to identify loss trends and establish guidelines that document risk, identify controls and provide underwriting guidance to the support and guide commercial insurance underwriting
- 10+ years of commercial underwriting experience
- 5+ years of leadership experience is preferred
