Job Summary & Requirements

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s Residential Withdrawal Management Services (WMS) provides residential patient centred care to individuals experiencing substance dependence or are seeking support during the process of withdrawal. The Interprofessional team provides individuals with 24-hour monitoring and support during the withdrawal phase, brief solution-focused counselling, therapeutic groups and referrals to community services and continuing care in order to best support the maintenance of early recovery.

Reporting directly to the Operations Director, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics. The Nurse Practitioner will provide direct and indirect comprehensive patient care services to support patient care in collaboration with an interprofessional team within the RVH’s Residential Withdrawal Management program to best support patient’s needs.

The Nurse Practitioner will also be responsible for delivering, coordinating and participating in education and professional development activities/programs; performing activities to further develop and strength the profession; acting as a resource and serving as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies; performing cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with job classification, as assigned or requested.

As a qualified candidate you will need have the following job requirements:

  • Master‘s degree program in Nursing, or recognized equivalent is required
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate or Registered Nurse in the Extended Class [RN (EC)] certification with additional specialization and certification in a clinical area of specialization required
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support required
  • Experience in addiction medicine and harm reduction strategies strongly recommended
  • Completion of the 6-hour Suboxone on-line education program preferred
  • Additional education and certification in area of specialty required
  • Current Certificate of (licensure)/registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Membership in the Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) organizations relevant to the role required
  • Membership in Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO)
  • Up to five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Including 3 years’ experience working in an acute treatment centre required
  • Experience in working in an advanced clinical practice role required, preferably as a Nurse Practitioner or a Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Experience in nursing research methodology required
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution required
  • Experience in area of specialty required
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, RVH and/or departmental policies
  • Demonstrate expertise as a Nurse Practitioner required

Withdrawal Management specific competencies:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the neurobiology of addiction.
  • Advanced practice assessments and interventions for a diverse range of clients with addiction problems.
  • Assesses and manages patients with addictions who have co-existing health conditions including but not limited to mental health conditions, blood borne diseases and infections.
  • Advanced health assessment to identify clients’ emotional, cognitive and behavioural states, as well as level of anxiety, crisis states, indices of aggression, self-harm, suicide, risk to others, competency to care for self, and signs of substance abuse, addiction, and withdrawal.
  • Utilizes evidence‐based interventions, including withdrawal and other medication management, to meet the needs of a diverse range of clients with addiction problems
  • Provides care to persons experiencing an addiction and / or mental health condition that is recovery oriented, trauma-informed, uses principles of harm reduction, and addresses social determinants of health.
  • Engages clients in strengths-based care that promotes resilience
  • Provides education to individuals and families about addiction and its management
  • Facilitates and engages in collaborative, inter- and intra-professional, and intersectoral practice when providing care for persons with an addiction(s).
  • Understands stigma as a barrier and assists and supports patients and families
  • Demonstrates knowledge related to the process of voluntary and involuntary care
  • Acts as a resource providing addiction‐related clinical advice for health and other professionals, community groups and clients and their families
  • Advocates for persons experiencing an addiction
  • Identifies and seeks new knowledge, skills, and supports related to care of patients with addictions and/ or mental health conditions.
