Position Summary:

The incumbent provides confidential interpretation between American Sign Language (ASL) and English employing varieties of Sign Language in academic and extracurricular settings primarily from GBC’s St. James Campus. Interpretation is provided for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, deafened and hearing (non-deaf) individuals including students, faculty, staff, and other related professionals.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provides ASL and English interpretation Services for students, faculty, committees, events, activities, staff, and other professionals for the CSHS division primarily from the 200 King Street East (St. James Campus) and to ensure appropriate environmental dynamics.

  • Prepares for interpreting situations by studying assignment-related resources, networking with related professionals and establishing linguistically appropriate communication strategies.

  • Provides interpreting services in meetings, staff sessions and college-wide events.

  • Consults with students, faculty, and staff around the appropriate use of an interpreter; to assess and arrange interpreting environments for successful communication dynamics.

  • Manages invoicing and data entry of services by placing statistical data into our Deaf and Hard of Hearing database, ensuring accurate tracking of service activity.

  • Promotes service excellence within the schools, participate in on-going professional development opportunities and monitor professional literature in order to keep abreast of new developments in the field.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum two-year ASL Interpreter Training Program diploma.

  • Minimum seven (7) years’ demonstrated experience in educational and community interpreting or equivalent.

  • The College requires proof of degrees, credentials or equivalencies from accredited regional or federal post-secondary institutions and/or their international equivalents. Credentials may require validation at the time of interviews or offer.

  • First consideration will be provided to regular part time (RPT) support staff in accordance with the part time Support Staff Collective Agreement.
