Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Safety & Security Manager, the Safety Specialist is a key advocate for workplace safety, responsible for promoting and maintaining a safety-first culture across all departments. This role provides both administrative and technical support to the Department, assisting in the identification, evaluation, and control of physical, chemical, and biological hazards in the workplace. The Safety Specialist helps ensure compliance with federal and provincial safety regulations and supports the implementation of safety programs that protect employees, guests, and contractors.
As a champion of safety, the Safety Specialist works closely with leaders and team members to embed safety into daily operations and decision-making. Core responsibilities include maintaining health and safety statistics, coordinating in-service training programs, conducting regular workplace inspections, and leading incident investigations. The Safety Specialist may serve as a first aid attendant, when required delivering prompt care within the scope of their training, completing incident documentation, and facilitating access to further medical assistance when necessary.

Key Areas of Accountability
Advisory And Compliance
- Provide advice and counsel to management and other team member groups on a broad range of occupational health and safety-related topics.
- Serves as the subject matter expert on health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures..
- Support compliance by monitoring adherence to applicable health and safety regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Review, develop, and update health and safety policies and procedures to reflect changing needs and requirements.
- Implement and reinforce preventative measures to reduce risk and promote a safe work environment.
- Develop and deliver safety training and briefings to team members and leaders across all departments.
- Assist in creating monthly safety reports, safety bulletins, and other safety-related communications.
- Support the workplace health & safety committee with resources, training and guidance.
- Monitor incident reports and audits to ensure accurate content and timely completion.
- Help build the skill set of our people leaders - Understand the concepts of employee/supervisor responsibilities, root cause analysis, corrective actions, employee injury management
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, and incidents.
- Assist with the employee injury management program (modified duties, lost time, and return to work).
- Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments to ensure compliance and best practices.
- Audit the effectiveness of corrective action taken in response to safety incidents and hazards.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Monitor safety performance and maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, and incident resports.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and guest experience teams to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Provide administrative support to the Safety & Security Department, as needed.
- Plan and lead emergency response drills to ensure preparedness and identify areas for improvement.
- Participate in regular departmental safety meetings to share insights and support continuous improvement.
- Participate in health, safety, and wellness-related projects as assigned.
- Assist with other health, safety, and security needs as required.
Education, Certification, Licenses
- Occupational Health and Safety Diploma and/or a degree in a relevant field
- First Aid Level 1 Certification; is an asset
- Valid BC Driver’s License; is an asset
- 3+ years of demonstrated work experience in a safety related field and/or regulatory compliance field
- Railroad experience is an asset
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- Leadership ability to positively influence safety culture throughout various operations groups and levels
- High attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
- Demonstrated proficiency in administrative reporting and auditing skills
- Strong analytical skills including the ability to develop actionable recommendations
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including conflict resolution and mediation.
- Takes personal accountability, adapts to changing circumstances and approaches problems proactively
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with focus on Excel and PowerPoint
- Working knowledge of safety management information system
- Able to collaborate effectively across departments and functions
- Travel may be required
- Physical demands may require lifting up to 50 lbs. on occasion
- Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
- 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules
- Indoor/outdoor working environment
- Vancouver corporate-based; Hybrid role, minimum 3 days in office.
- The base salary offered for this role is $63,000 to $75,000 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
