Schedule: 3pm to 11 pm shelter worker-Monday to Friday
Position Purpose Summary
The Shelter Worker serves as The Salvation Army representative to Shelter Guests, Apartment Tenants and Visitors, providing them with a safe and secure environment.
Accountabilities
The Shelter Worker will partner with a Lead Hand on shift for all shift decisions. The Shelter Worker may work with the Case Worker on guest concerns. The Shelter Manager will be the supervisor for the Shelter Worker.

Internal
The Incumbent is involved in minor financial responsibility regularly, or on a relief basis and is responsible for the wise use of their department resources. They may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.
Working Conditions
The incumbent’s work environment is the Evergreen Shelter & Apartments. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
Note: An alternative level of education and experience will be considered.
The target hiring range for this position is $24.47 to $24.85 with a maximum of $25.23.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

Position Purpose Summary
The Shelter Worker serves as The Salvation Army representative to Shelter Guests, Apartment Tenants and Visitors, providing them with a safe and secure environment.
Accountabilities
- Reads HIFIS and Staff to Staff notes at the beginning of each shift
- Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
- May serve as Receptionist for Shelter answering phones promptly and as necessary
- Monitor the activities of the clients/residents and maintain availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage of prescribed medications
- May assist with meal prep, coffee service, clean-up and serving
- Completes cleaning duties as assigned
- Participating in scheduled job-related training as required
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
- Provides appropriate assistance to guests when required
- Communicates food allergy information to Cook
- Communicates with other staff observation/concerns at shift change conference
- Ensure all contact with donors, the public, staff from other agencies, and with staff from other Salvation Army programs are courteous and professional.
- Always treat all residents with respect and dignity.
- May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
- Comply with all safety procedures
- Ensures proper lifting, twisting & reaching techniques are used during job performance
- Check intercom & monitor before answering the door. Answer the door with proper precautions.

Education And Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- The successful job applicant will have completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Food Safe level 1 certification
- First Aid Level 1 certification
- A valid Drivers’ License and clean drivers abstract (required for some positions).
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry, vulnerable sector check)
- Criminal Records Check to be done at hire
Note: An alternative level of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum one year’s experience in the Social Services field would be considered an asset.
- Post-Secondary certifications in related fields would be considered an asset.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Good listening skills
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
