Job Summary

The Steel Bridge Worker is responsible for contributing to Brides and Structures and work outside to assist with and replace or repair worn or broken components. In addition, the incumbent participates in fabricating and building new components for timber, concrete, and steel railway structures, including bridges and culverts.

Major Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble, and build timber, concrete, and steel railway bridge components
  • Reading/interpreting blueprints, plans and engineering drawings.
  • Providing material estimates for certain portions of repairs and projects.
  • Use various common and specialized hand and power tools
  • Prepare and carry out minor maintenance of tools for assigned work
  • Remove and replace defective bridge, culvert, and other structural components
  • Load, unload, sort, shovel, and distribute various materials
  • Following company policies and procedures including safe work practices.
  • Operate Hirail boom truck to load, transport, and unload bridge, as well as culvert material on road and rail



Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in a unionized environment as a crew member to perform various maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks, in a safety-sensitive environment around heavy moving equipment and noisy surroundings, outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Capable of working in various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • The role requires frequent travel (80%) that requires work away from home for extended periods to Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario
  • The role requires the ability to lift from 50 to 85 lbs as well as to climb and work at height using fall protection equipment

Requirements

  • Experience in structural environments
  • Experience in physical labour, including lifting and occasional heavy lifting*
  • Completion of high school or a General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Attend, pass, and maintain applicable training such as timber, crane, Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG), National Safety Code (NSC), and steel
  • Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certified Welder an asset
  • Welding experience will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to provide material estimates and maintain inventory of tools required to do the job
  • Knowledge and experience in working with hand and power tools.
  • Class 3 Driver’s Licence with air endorsement or equivalent in the province of residence*
  • Ability to read and understand detailed drawings and sketches for various types of repair work and new construction
  • Must be familiar with computers skills related to communication, able to prepare and submit work reports.
  • Ability to follow strict guidelines concerning safe work practices
  • Knowledge of cleaning, fabrication, installation, repairs, and maintenance of steel and concrete structures, as well as culverts
  • Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset

This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.



Paid Training

Successful candidates will take part in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB) with additional on-the-job training to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN’s safety standards. The training is primarily on health and safety rules as successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment as a Steel Bridge Worker at CN.
