Your Impact in this Role:

The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of the municipality’s fleet and heavy equipment. This role ensures that all municipal vehicles and heavy equipment are serviced and maintained in compliance with safety regulations and operational requirements. The Supervisor provides leadership to mechanics and garage staff, oversees scheduling and resource allocation, and ensures cost-effective fleet maintenance.

About the Job Duties:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Municipal Works Garage, ensuring timely maintenance and repair of the municipality’s fleet and heavy equipment.
  • Guide and support mechanics and garage staff, ensuring compliance with municipal standards, safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to maximize vehicle lifespan and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate and schedule repairs, inspections, and servicing for municipal vehicles, including snowplows, and heavy equipment.
  • Monitor inventory levels of parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring cost-effective procurement and proper inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial vehicle safety and emissions regulations, workplace safety policies, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of fleet maintenance, inspections, and repairs, preparing reports for senior management and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor garage expenditures and works within the department’s budget to ensure cost-effective fleet management.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests and breakdowns, coordinating resources to minimize service disruptions

  • Guides and supports team members to meet operational objectives, ensuring compliance with organizational standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Fosters a collaborative and respectful work environment by addressing concerns, providing constructive feedback, and supporting skill development.

Qualifications (Essential & Preferred):

Education & Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenced as a 310T Truck and Coach Technician or a 310S Automotive Service Technician with the ability to obtain 310T Truck and Coach Technician Certification.
  • Valid Ontario Class D with Z Endorsement Driver's Licence is preferred, minimum a valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fleet maintenance, heavy equipment servicing, or municipal garage operations, including supervisory responsibilities. Experience in a unionized environment, preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fleet Maintenance Expertise: Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repair techniques, and preventive maintenance for municipal fleets.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Strong understanding of provincial and federal vehicle safety standards, emissions testing, and workplace safety regulations.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and mentor mechanics, technicians, and garage staff in a dynamic work environment.
  • Budget & Inventory: Experience handling the parts inventory, controlling costs, and maintaining financial records.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues, implement solutions, and coordinate emergency repairs.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for coordinating teams, reporting to senior management, and engaging with suppliers.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with diagnostic software, fleet management systems, and maintenance tracking tools.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize repair schedules, allocate resources, and meet service deadlines.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work with other municipal departments to align fleet maintenance with operational needs.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a municipal garage environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, heavy machinery, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Physical demands include lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working in confined spaces.
  • Standard business hours including emergency call-ins, may be required to support fleet operations.
  • Compliance with workplace safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), is required.

Work Location and Schedule:

  • 1225 Ontario Street, Cornwall ON, K6H 5T9
  • Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm with a 30-minute lunch.
