Surveyor Manager

Summary

Reporting into Director, Sudbury, the Surveyor Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the surveying department. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate collection, processing, and management of data across construction projects.

This role balances high-level technical expertise with team leadership, scheduling, and strategic resource allocation. The Surveyor Manager is responsible for standardizing field procedures, mentoring surveying staff, and acting as the primary point of contact for project managers, clients, and engineering teams to ensure project delivery is accurate, safe, and on schedule.

Primary Scope Of Role

Team Leadership & Operations Management

  • Oversee, schedule, and coordinate the daily operations of the surveying team across multiple heavy civil project sites.
  • Act as the senior technical liaison between the survey department, Project Managers, Superintendents, and external client representatives.
  • Manage the procurement, maintenance, calibration, and software updates for all Robotic Total Stations, GPS equipment, and CAD systems.

Quality Assurance & Technical Accountability

  • Certify, approve, and assume ultimate liability for final sketches, maps, reports, redlines, and as-built drawings.
  • Establish strict standards for and audit the accuracy of survey data, field calculations, and geodetic measurements performed by staff.
  • Translate intricate contract drawings and unit pay items into accurate, actionable field layouts for the team.

Financial Controls & Quantity Surveying

  • Oversee complex cubic volume calculations (such as cut to waste, cut to fill, and sub-excavation) and verify final earthworks topography.
  • Verify quantity surveys and distributed unit pay items to ensure accurate data is provided for client billing and progress claims.

Position Requirements

  • Completion of post-secondary diploma in a civil engineering technology/construction management program.
  • Minimum 7 years of practical surveying/layout experience on heavy civil construction projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in Robotic Total Station, GPS, CAD and MS Office software.
  • Proficient with the use of GPS and survey measurement equipment.
  • Mathematical aptitude to complete surveying calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, plans and layout sheets and keep legible survey notes.
  • Ability to lead a surveying team and work with project team members regularly.
  • Excellent communication skills for maintaining relationships with employees and public.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

  • Expected Base Salary: [$90,000 - $125,000 per year. The actual base salary will depend on several factors including experience, qualifications, internal equity, work location and market expectations.
