Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

The Store Supervisor ensures the efficient and effective reclamation, processing, and distribution of goods at the thrift store; providing excellent service to guests, fulfilling various sales and production roles within the store, and assists the manager by directing tasks and providing oversight, as assigned. Will be responsible for opening/closing and daily reporting. In addition, the Supervisor authorizes payments and return merchandise, resolves problems and guest complaints as they arise, and assists in training and monitoring new staff.

Operations

Accountabilities:

  • Directs all operations of the Thrift store
  • Ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”
  • Monitors loss prevention program in compliance with the budget
  • Oversees and participates in facility management including cleaning, maintenance, repairs in/outside and grounds maintenance
  • Ensure proper processing of donations and store merchandising
  • Comply with all legislative and company policies and procedures adhering to Health and Safety, Operations, Financial, and other company policies
  • Lock up sales cash and receipts at the end of each shift
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Purchasing of items required by the Thrift Store
  • Prepare paperwork for weekly Sales to Accounting Operations

Supervision

  • Provides supervision to staff and volunteers and ensures adherence to quality standards for volunteers or temporary staff for special events/activities
  • Assigns work to others in work unit and reviews for quality
  • Takes responsibility for staff safety by ensuring overall compliance with all safety procedures and by monitoring Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Monitor performance and employee/labour relations issues and provide report and feedback to Corps Officer/s
  • Provide resolution to employee and guest concerns or refer as necessary

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Internal

Governance Boards and Councils:

  • Community Ministries Director

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

  • This position reports directly to the Community Ministries Director
  • Initial and primary point-of-contact for all Thrift Store workers and customers
  • This position has between 1 and 5 direct reports

Financial And Materials Management

  • This role is involved in minor financial matters regularly, and or has responsibility for the wise use of their own resources
  • Management, safekeeping, and proper processing of donations, merchandise, facility, and equipment in the store
  • Accountable for operating and maintaining specialized equipment

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the store with the typical disagreeable conditions such as exposure to odours, used, possibly dirty and dusty items, extreme temperature changes (from store receiving area or door screening of consumers, to cash desk), truck fumes, store noise, verbal abuse, exposure to the general public , the marginalized, and potentially people with mental or behavioural illnesses
  • Flexible work schedule including Saturdays required
  • Requires regular application of physical force to move/lift/transport awkward objects and/or materials which can weigh up to 29 lbs.; may be required to lift heavier weights up to 39 lbs. on occasion
  • Kneeling and occasionally twisting, bending, crouching, reaching and reaching overhead

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of High School (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable)
  • Experience with Microsoft applications is a must

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum of one to two years of prior related experience, including retail and supervisory experience
  • Cash handling experience is required.

Skills And Attributes

  • Brand awareness would be a definite asset
  • Basic math skills required to calculate discounts and percentages as well as reading skills
  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required
  • Ability to lift/move up to 25 pounds on a regular basis
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training

This is a full time position at 40 hours per week.

Target range is $18.05 - $22.56 per hour.

This position requires a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $18.05 to $22.56 with a maximum of $27.07.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
