The role
The person holding the position of Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Advisor will report to the Director, Ethics and Compliance. The ATIP Advisor will be responsible for providing advice and guidance on the interpretation and application of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act within the Corporation. The role involves managing access to information requests and privacy enquiries, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, and supporting the development of policies and procedures to meet those requirements.

The role
The person holding the position of Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Advisor will report to the Director, Ethics and Compliance. The ATIP Advisor will be responsible for providing advice and guidance on the interpretation and application of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act within the Corporation. The role involves managing access to information requests and privacy enquiries, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, and supporting the development of policies and procedures to meet those requirements.
The Responsibilities
Access to Information
- Review and process access to information requests in accordance with the Access to Information Act.
- Conduct thorough searches for records, ensuring accurate and timely responses to requests.
- Draft correspondence to requesters, third parties and consulted parties, including decision letters, outlining the reasons for release or exemption of requested records.
- Manage privacy inquiries in accordance with the Privacy Act.
- Advise and assist in the implementation of privacy policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the Privacy Act.
- Ensure that requests are handled within statutory timelines and comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and submit annual reports, including summaries of access and privacy activities, to senior management and relevant authorities.
- Provide training to staff and conduct awareness activities regarding access to information and privacy principles.
- Offer advice on best practices for handling data and responding to requests.
- Assist in the development and review of internal policies, procedures, and guidelines related to access to information and privacy issues.
- Stay informed about changes to access to information and privacy laws and regulations, as well as policies, directives, standards and guidelines applicable to government institutions, and incorporate new requirements into organizational practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, law, information management, or a related field. An ATIP-related certification is an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in an ATIP role or a similar capacity and in processing access to information requests and managing privacy enquiries.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian federal privacy and access to information laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of information management systems and databases.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and correspondence.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Attention to detail and a thorough understanding of confidentiality and data protection principles.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, stakeholders, and external parties.
- Strong sense of professionalism and discretion.
- Bilingualism (French and English).
