The Organization
The APMC was created in 1974 under the Petroleum Marketing Act and is an agent of the Crown working to enhance the value of Alberta’s petroleum resources. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, APMC executes on the government’s direction and currently manages: the marketing of the Crown’s royalty share of conventional crude oil; Alberta’s oil and natural gas royalty reference prices, Alberta’s stake in the Sturgeon Refinery; development of business opportunities to support and enable industry growth; execution of commercial petroleum ventures that benefit Alberta and acts in an advisory capacity on opportunities and issues related to the petroleum industry.

The Opportunity
Reports to: Senior Manager of Business Development Direct Reports: No Direct Reports Location: Calgary, Alberta
Mandate
We are seeking a dynamic analyst to join our team, focusing on Natural Gas, NGLs and Power strategic marketing analysis and business development. This role is instrumental in enhancing our understanding of supply-demand economics across the natural gas and power markets. You will work closely with senior leadership to provide actionable insights that inform strategy, investment, and market engagement decisions. This pivotal role demands a deep understanding of both North America and global market dynamics and industry trends. The ideal candidate will excel at identifying and capitalizing on new business opportunities, significantly influencing marketing strategies, driving revenue growth, and enhancing our company's footprint in the energy market.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain robust models for natural gas and power supply-demand fundamentals for Alberta produced Natural Gas and NGLs.
- Track and analyze market drivers, including production trends, storage levels, regulatory developments, LNG flows, pipeline dynamics, power dispatch, and emissions policies.
- Synthesize complex data into clear insights and communicate implications for price movements, basis spreads, and infrastructure bottlenecks.
- Support scenario analysis, pricing forecasts, and long-term market outlooks.
- Prepare written reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate on strategic initiatives that link natural gas and power markets with broader energy system trends.
- Monitor and interpret relevant data from government, industry, and commercial sources.
- Take part in the development of business proposals, presentations, and pitches to secure new contracts, projects, or partnerships.
- Identify and evaluate potential business opportunities, partnerships, and alliances within the energy sector to drive revenue growth.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from various sources to derive actionable insights and inform decision-making processes.
- Provide direct analytical support and collaboration with management in areas related to organizational and industry growth initiatives.
First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success
Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:
- Support leadership in developing and executing strategic plans within the natural gas and power industry.
- Develop and implement comprehensive models to analyze natural gas, NGLs and power market data, focusing on pricing trends, supply and demand dynamics, and regulatory changes.
- Identify and evaluate at least three potential business opportunities or partnerships within the energy sector. Develop and present business proposals or pitches to secure new contracts or projects by the end of the year.
- Develop and maintain forecasting models and scenario analyses to support strategic planning and risk management. Deliver a comprehensive forecasting report by Q4, outlining potential impacts and strategic recommendations.
- Maintain and enhance existing process models to align with business objectives. Implement at least two process improvements by the end of the year to increase efficiency in credit exposure monitoring and reporting
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will have the following:
Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, finance or economics and 5+ years of experience in energy market analysis, preferably with a focus on North American natural gas and/or power markets.
Experience:
- Experience with NGTL and AESO, or other key systems such as Mainline and Alliance is a plus. Including a robust understanding of Alberta’s gas and power infrastructure system, including limitations, future expansions and egress connectivity.
- Experience with LNG market analysis is a plus.
- Experience with crude oil supply demand analysis is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey and visualize complex issues to a non-technical audience.
- Self-starter with intellectual curiosity and a passion for energy market dynamics. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Proven economic, financial modelling and data analytics skills.
- Deep understanding of oil and gas market dynamics, including supply chain, pricing mechanisms, transportation, regulatory landscapes and cross commodities.
- Demonstrated experience in working in a dynamic environment dealing with complex issues.

- Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
