The Clinical Scholar Role provides experienced nurses with leadership and mentorship opportunities, supporting newly graduated nurses, (within 18 months of graduation), internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses seeking to upskill.
Reporting to the Manager of Nursing Practice and Education, the Clinical Scholar provides on-unit, “at the elbow” mentorship and clinical guidance to program participants, while completing required tracking and data collection for reporting to the Ministry of Health. The role is deployed to areas of greatest organizational need and is not assigned to a single unit; therefore, the successful candidate must demonstrate agility, flexibility and the ability to effectively support learners across multiple clinical environments. Strong knowledge and recent experience in acute inpatient care, and other departments are essential. Transportation to all sites is required to support learners.
Skills/Abilities/Qualifications
Required
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
- Current BCLS certification
- At least five years’ experience in frontline nursing care in an acute hospital inpatient setting with demonstrated clinical expertise across a broad range of clinical specialties
- Minimum one year experience providing formal clinical teaching, training and mentorship, exceeding solely preceptor/mentor activities
- Excellent demonstration of evidence-based clinical skills and competencies
- Demonstrated experience teaching and precepting new staff/students, including providing constructive feedback
- Demonstrated physical assessment skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to: respond positively to change, work independently, organize, and set priorities, problem solve, meet timelines
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various adult learning principles and techniques
- Leadership, problem solving, decision making, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant and professional, responsible and reassuring manner
- Interest and experience in patient education and health promotion
- Commitment to continuous professional development and continuing education
- Ability and willingness to work all shifts
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Microsoft Office
- Ability to travel to support Brightshores sites
- Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record

- Master’s Degree
- Prior Experience as a Clinical Scholar an asset
