Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position will be a University of Calgary Research position with permission to access Alberta Health Services (AHS) records through affiliate status.

Position is located at the South Health Campus.

This will specifically involve being present in the South Health Campus Emergency Department for 5 days per week (all weekdays) for approximately 7 hours per day. The Research Assistant's job will be to identify emergency department patients potentially eligible for study participation. The Research Asistant would then approach the emergency department circle of care team member (i.e. nurse, doctor, etc.) and ask permission to introduce themselves and the study to the patient. If permission is obtained, the research assistant would complete the process of review of inclusion/exclusion criteria for study enrollment, complete informed consent and collect baseline variables, as per the study data collection form. The research assistant will then complete follow up telephone call(s) and collect relevant data variables at that time.

Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Understand and implement basic research procedures with respect to informed consent, data collection and reporting
  • Administrative support regarding the projects to Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Work on ethics applications as needed
  • Collect and log data; keeping clear and accurate records
  • Conduct analyses of data set
  • Prepare graphs and spreadsheets to portray results
  • Create presentation slides and posters to help researchers present findings
  • Review print and online resources to gather information
  • Check facts, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy
  • Work collaboratively with emergency department physicians, nurses and pharmacy team
  • Work collaboratively with Research Coordinators at Foothills Medical Centre
  • Be available by telephone and email while on shift/at work
  • Be comfortable in an emergency department environment


Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Ethics-related certifications TCPS 2 and GCP required. AHS Privacy Certificate
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and patient related skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as RedCAP database
  • Appropriate AHS training will be required, and existing Research Coordinator Connect Care training is considered a strong candidate asset
